Meet Maureen Bryan, a traveller who had left South Africa for eight long years due to concerns about safety and a perceived change in the atmosphere of her beloved homeland. She ventured to different corners of the globe in search of a place that could capture her heart the way South Africa once had. Yet she found herself yearning for something more, something she couldn’t quite put her finger on.

In 2022, Maureen and her family embarked on a journey that would take them from Thailand to Poland. Their first stop was Johannesburg, and they chose to stay at Lord’s Signature Hotel. Arriving in June, they were greeted by the biting cold of the South African winter, a stark contrast to the tropical climate they had left behind. Maureen, unprepared for the chilly weather, found herself shivering and unable to order a meal in the hotel restaurant.

And then, like a ray of sunshine on a cold winter morning, there was Ronald. Our restaurant manager, whom Maureen affectionately refers to as “my friend Ronald from SA.” In an act of extraordinary kindness, Ronald took off his own sweater and placed it around Maureen’s shoulders to provide her with some much-needed warmth. This selfless gesture left an indelible mark on Maureen’s heart.

Over the next few days, Maureen and Ronald forged a deep connection, chatting about life, sharing stories, and forming a bond that transcended borders. Maureen left South Africa once again, but she carried the warmth and kindness of her friend Ronald with her, and the story of his generosity spread across two continents.

Fast forward to today; Maureen is back in South Africa, and she decided to stay. What compelled her to make this life-changing decision? It’s people like Ronald who make South Africa feel like home. Ronald, with his infectious smile and welcoming embrace, embodies the very essence of our country: warm, kind, and full of heart.

Maureen revisited Lord’s Signature Hotel and was welcomed by Ronald’s familiar smile and a warm hug. She didn’t want to leave because, in our hotel and especially with Ronald, she didn’t feel like just another customer; she felt like she was home.
